Amazon bought more renewable power last year than any other company
Amazon has made significant strides in its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by investing heavily in renewable energy. According to BloombergNEF, the e-commerce giant purchased a massive 100 new renewable projects in the past year, taking its total portfolio to over 33 gigawatts of generating capacity. This marks a significant milestone for Amazon as it continues to make progress towards achieving its goal of becoming net zero by 2040.
Amazon’s additions are so substantial that they have surpassed even Apple’s efforts, which were previously considered industry-leading. The company’s renewable and storage contracts have enabled it to reduce emissions from purchased electricity, known as Scope 2 emissions, despite increasing data center operations.
While Amazon has made notable progress in reducing its carbon footprint, there is still much work to be done. A significant portion of the company’s emissions come from activities over which it exercises less control, known as Scope 3 emissions. This includes air travel, leased buildings, and construction projects.
