As Industry Struggles, Who Are The World’s Biggest Fur Producers?
The fur industry has been facing immense pressure in recent years due to concerns over animal welfare and the rise of plant-based alternatives. Despite this, it appears that some countries have managed to maintain their production levels. According to data from Statista, China emerges as the world’s largest producer of mink and fox pelts, with an output of 3.5 million units in 2023.
Poland comes in second, producing between one and two million pelts annually. Russia, the United States, Greece, and Spain also feature among the top producers. Surprisingly, Canada, Finland, Norway, Austria, and the UK are no longer significant players due to various bans and shutdowns on fur farming.
Notably, China’s massive production has come at a time when global output is plummeting. While 2012 saw over 81 million mink and fox pelts produced worldwide, this figure had decreased to under 15 million by 2023. Many countries have already banned or are in the process of banning fur farming due to animal welfare concerns.
Russia, Poland, Canada, Finland, China, the United States, Greece, and Spain have managed to maintain their production levels despite these challenges.
