Mark Cuban, the billionaire owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and investor in various tech startups, has announced he will back a new social media platform built on Bluesky’s protocol.
Bluesky is an open-source alternative to TikTok that aims to prioritize moderation transparency and community involvement. In his statement, Cuban emphasized the need for a reliable and trustworthy platform, citing concerns over the lack of regulation and accountability on current social media platforms.
“We can’t continue to let these platforms operate in the shadows, allowing misinformation and disinformation to spread unchecked,” he said during an interview at the annual CES conference.
Cuban’s announcement comes as TikTok faces increasing pressure from government agencies and privacy advocates to reform its content moderation policies. Although the platform claims it will comply with U.S. regulations, there remains skepticism over how effective these measures will be in addressing concerns about hate speech, harassment, and other issues.
As for RedNote, another social media alternative gaining traction among American users, Cuban expressed doubts over the app’s ability to compete long-term.
“While I appreciate the effort, RedNote is just a Band-Aid solution,” he stated. “If we truly want to create meaningful change, we need a platform that not only provides transparency but also fosters community involvement.”
In his vision for the new social media platform, Cuban emphasized his commitment to working closely with moderation experts and user advocates to ensure the platform’s integrity.
“By building on Bluesky’s protocol, we can create an environment where users are the gatekeepers of their own content. It’s time for us to take control of our digital lives,” he concluded.
Mark Cuban is known for his support of innovative startups and his willingness to challenge established norms in tech and society.
