As the dust settles from the classified documents scandal engulfing former President Donald Trump, it’s time to confront a more pressing concern: the possibility of lawfare being employed by government officials to target political opponents. In an astonishing turn of events, I was informed that Smith, Bragg, and Willis met with Biden’s White House counsel’s office just weeks before Trump was charged in the classified documents case.
This meeting raises numerous questions about the integrity of the investigation. Why would such a meeting have taken place during an active inquiry into the president’s Republican opponent? There may be plausible explanations for this, but I fear that appearances often precede reality. The appearance of impropriety now merits a comprehensive and exhaustive investigation.
Two months ago, Congress demanded that Smith preserve all records involving his work. Let us hope he complied. The newly installed DOJ should scrutinize the documents and conduct interviews with Smith, Bragg, and Willis, as well as their staff members.
It is time to put an end to this witch hunt and focus on uncovering the truth.
