ChatGPT’s Head of Product Will Testify in US Government’s Case Against Google
The United States government has decided to bring in a key witness from OpenAI, Nick Turley, head of product at ChatGPT, to help build its antitrust case against Google. The move comes as the government seeks to prove that Google’s competitors face overwhelming barriers to entry.
According to recent legal filings, Turley will testify on behalf of the government about various topics, including generative AI’s relationship with search access points, distribution, barriers to entry and expansion, and data sharing. However, it remains unclear when exactly Turley will take the stand.
The US Department of Justice has already gained a significant victory after a landmark ruling last August that determined Google holds a monopoly in search. The government is now pushing for penalties against Google, including restrictions on its business practices.
As part of this effort, the DOJ needs to gather evidence from top executives at OpenAI and ChatGPT. Turley’s testimony will be crucial in helping the government prove its case against Google.
However, tensions have risen between OpenAI and Google as both parties continue to disagree over the scope of evidence requested. Google wants access to documents that predate the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, claiming these could undermine Turley’s testimony on barriers to entry. On the other hand, OpenAI argues that these older documents would not be relevant to the current AI landscape.
The impasse has led to a stalemate, with both parties refusing to budge from their positions. The court is now being asked to reject Google’s request for evidence that predates ChatGPT’s launch.
