The United States Department of the Treasury has announced sanctions against a Chinese organization linked to the notorious Salt Typhoon hacking group. This move comes in response to the group’s involvement in a massive breach of major US telecom firms.
According to reports, the hacking group exploited vulnerabilities in the networks of at least nine significant US telecom and internet service providers, including AT&T and Verizon. This allowed them access to sensitive data, including the private communications of senior government officials and political figures.
Furthermore, it is alleged that Salt Typhoon hacked into systems used by law enforcement agencies for court-authorized collection of customer data, potentially gaining access to crucial information such as identities of Chinese targets of US surveillance.
The Treasury Department has announced sanctions against Sichuan Juxinhe Network Technology, a China-based cybersecurity company, citing “direct involvement” in the exploitation of these US telecom and internet service providers.
