Char’s Red Gundam In ‘GQuuuuuX’ Has Some Curious History Behind It
In a surprising twist, the latest installment in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, “GQuuuuuuX”, has unveiled a plotline that bears an uncanny resemblance to a 1998 Sega Saturn turn-based strategy game called Gihren’s Greed. The game, which was never released outside of Japan, featured a scenario where Char Aznable finds the original RX-78-2 Gundam and repaints it red.
This “what if” premise has clearly been revisited in “GQuuuuuuX”, where Char finds the same mobile suit and gives it a distinctive red makeover. Fans in Japan have been quick to pick up on this connection, and online discussions are rife with nostalgia and analysis of the potential implications for the storyline.
Interestingly, none of the Gihren’s Greed games ever made their way Westward, due to the relatively small Western fandom for Gundam at the time. Despite this, fan translations did emerge, and it seems that the creators of “GQuuuuuuX” have chosen to revisit this concept rather than striking out on a completely new path.
The inclusion of Ikuto Yamashita’s mecha designs in the new anime is another point of interest for fans, as his work was not featured in any previous Gundam titles. It remains to be seen how this development will impact the overall narrative of “GQuuuuuuX”.
For now, it appears that the creators have chosen to revisit a piece of Gundam history that has been largely overlooked by Western audiences.
