Meta has announced that it will continue to utilize fact-checkers outside of the United States for the time being. According to Nicola Mendelsohn, Meta’s head of global business, there are currently no plans to alter this approach globally at present.
The company had previously implemented a fact-checking program in response to criticism over misinformation spreading on its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. This move follows a number of high-profile instances where users have been misinformed or misled through the use of false information.
Despite announcing that it will replace its fact-checkers with a community notes system similar to X’s approach elsewhere in the world, Meta remains committed to continuing this process globally for now.
However, there may be challenges in implementing this new system outside of the U.S., particularly in Europe where regulations such as the Digital Services Act (DSA) exist to curb the spread of deceptive content.
