Toto’s Steve Lukather Questions the Intentions Behind Weezer’s ‘Africa’ Cover
In a recent interview with Billboard, Toto guitarist and founding member Steve Lukather expressed skepticism about the intentions behind Weezer’s 2019 cover of “Africa”. The original song was released by Toto in 1982 and has since become one of their most iconic hits.
According to Lukather, he is unsure why Weezer decided to cover a song that has already been a huge success for another artist. “I don’t get it,” he said. “Why would you want to do a song that’s so closely associated with someone else? It just seems like a strange choice.”
Lukather went on to emphasize the importance of originality and creativity in music, stating that copying others’ work does not contribute positively to the artistic landscape. “The only thing that matters is making something new and meaningful,” he emphasized.
Weezer has been known for their creative take on popular culture, including their recent stint on a Greatest Hits tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy. Despite this, their ‘Africa’ cover received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike.
Lukather’s comments come as the music industry continues to grapple with issues of intellectual property and artistic originality in the face of an increasingly homogenized musical landscape.
