
Figure Skating Community Mourns Victims of Deadly Plane Crash Collision: ‘At a Loss for Words’
The figure skating community is in shock and mourning after a tragic plane crash collision that occurred in Arlington, Virginia on January 30, 2025. The accident, which involved a U.S. Army helicopter, has left all 67 people onboard presumed dead.
Several Team USA figure skaters have taken to social media to express their condolences and offer support to the families affected by the disaster. Josphine Lee, an American figure skater, posted on Instagram, “This is heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone on the flight, including the skaters, coaches, and parents.”
Fellow skater Luke Wang echoed similar sentiments on X, writing, “Praying for all those on the flight from Wichita to DC. Among the passengers were skaters and coaches. Absolutely heartbreaking.”
Other U.S. figure skaters, including reigning pairs junior champion Hana Maria Aboian and Starr Andrews, also shared their shock and sadness on social media.
“I am at a loss for words… I can’t even explain how devastated I feel for the loss of amazing people that were on this flight,” said Andrews in her post. “I’m sending prayers to their families and the figure skating community.”
The International Skating Union has also issued a statement, expressing its condolences and support to those affected by the tragedy.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy. Figure skating is more than a sport – it’s a close-knit family – and we stand together. We remain in close contact with U.S. Figure Skating and offer our full support during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.
Two former Olympians, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, were also confirmed to be among the victims of the plane crash by the Kremlin.
As the news of the tragedy continues to unfold, the figure skating community is coming together to offer support and comfort to those affected.
