A former California teacher who was fired from her job after refusing to follow a school district’s policies on gender identity has celebrated the recent executive order by former President Donald Trump targeting gender ideology in schools.
Jessica Tapia, a Christian mother of three, was terminated by the Jurupa Unified School District in 2021 for allegedly violating district policy by not referring to students by their preferred pronouns and gender. However, she claimed that she was ordered to lie to parents about their children’s gender transitions without their consent.
Tapia has become an advocate for teachers who are faced with similar dilemmas, encouraging them to stand firm in their convictions despite the potential costs. She has spoken out against the district’s policies, saying they promote a “woke” agenda that is at odds with her Christian beliefs.
The recent executive order by Trump, which prohibits federal funding from being used to teach gender ideology in schools and requires schools to notify parents about their child’s gender identity, was a surreal moment for Tapia. She said it served as affirmation that she had done the right thing by standing up against the district’s policies.
“It’s hard to find the words for how I felt learning about that,” Tapia told Fox News Digital. “Almost surreal, honestly, because again, it’s like now the tide has turned so completely.”
Tapia expressed hope that Trump’s order would protect teachers and parents from being forced to promote gender ideology in schools. She believes it will also bring relief to those who have been silenced or bullied for expressing their moral convictions.
“Teachers have been walking away in droves, leaving education because of what it’s become,” Tapia said. “And so hope is definitely rising.”
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), one of the largest teachers’ labor unions in the nation, has criticized Trump’s order, saying it will make teachers’ jobs more difficult and create division in classrooms.
Tapia’s story has inspired thousands of people across the nation to reach out to her for support and guidance. She continues to share her experience with others, encouraging them to stand firm in their beliefs despite the potential costs.
The settlement reached by Tapia with the school district did not admit any fault or wrongdoing on its part, stating that it was a compromise of a disputed claim.
