Warning to Brits signed up to visit North Korea’s ‘Benidorm’
As Brits flock to North Korea’s ‘Benidorm’, a resort town touted as the country’s answer to the Spanish party capital, an expert has sounded a stark warning: tourists risk paying the ultimate price for minor offenses.
The alarming message comes after the tragic death of Otto Warmbier, an American student who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempting to steal a political propaganda poster. He was released from North Korea in a coma and died days later.
As Britain’s interest in the secretive state grows, with some tourists drawn in by the allure of its ‘Benidorm-like’ resorts, a leading expert has cautioned that the country’s notorious judicial system poses a significant risk to visitors.
“North Korea is not a place for light-hearted tourism,” warns Dr. Robert E Kelly, an expert on the North Korean military and government. “The legal system in North Korea is extremely harsh, and even minor offenses can result in severe punishment, including imprisonment.”
Dr. Kelly emphasized that while some resorts may seem ‘Benidorm-like’, the reality is that tourists are not immune to the country’s draconian laws.
“Even if you’re just posing for a selfie with a North Korean soldier, if something goes wrong, the consequences could be catastrophic,” Dr. Kelly warned.
In light of Otto Warmbier’s devastating story, Dr. Kelly urged Brits to carefully consider their travel plans before heading to North Korea.
