EU Puts Out Guidance on Uses of AI That Are Banned Under Its AI Act
The European Union’s executive body has published draft guidelines outlining the prohibited uses of artificial intelligence (AI) under its AI Act, a risk-based framework for regulating AI applications. The guidelines are intended to ensure consistent and uniform application of the AI Act across the region.
As you may know, the AI Act prohibits certain “unacceptable risk” use-cases of AI, including social scoring that could result in detrimental or unfavorable treatment; harmful manipulation using subliminal techniques; and other specific instances. Violations of these rules can attract hefty penalties, up to 7% of a company’s global turnover or €35 million, whichever is greater.
While the guidelines are not legally binding, they offer legal explanations and practical examples to help developers and stakeholders understand and comply with the AI Act’s requirements.
