In a move aimed at promoting the resettlement of Afrikaner refugees fleeing government-sponsored, race-based discrimination in South Africa, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order freezing all U.S. foreign assistance to the country.
The controversial decision comes as a response to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s signing of the Expropriation Act, which critics argue erodes private property rights and allows for the confiscation of land without just compensation.
Under the new law, the government can expropriate land for public use or in the public interest. However, there have been no reported instances of land seizure under the act.
The Trump administration claims that South Africa’s actions violate human rights principles and threaten the country’s economic stability.
“The U.S. cannot support a government that engages in rights violations,” said a senior White House official. “We are putting our foreign assistance on hold until we see meaningful reforms.”
The executive order also prioritizes humanitarian relief, including admission and resettlement through the United States Refugee Admissions Program, for Afrikaner refugees fleeing persecution.
In a statement, Trump emphasized his administration’s commitment to promoting freedom, democracy, and individual rights worldwide.
“We cannot stand idly by as South Africa takes steps that undermine its own economy and erode fundamental human rights,” he said.
