Figure Skating Mom Starts “Skates of Hope” to Honor D.C. Plane Crash Victims
A devastating tragedy has led a figure skating mom to start a mission to help others in need. Christine Cheesman, whose 12-year-old daughter became hooked on figure skating after a school field trip, has launched “Skates of Hope,” an initiative to honor the lives lost in the recent D.C. plane crash.
The mom, who often hits the ice with her daughter, said that being on the ice gives her a sense of freedom and renewed purpose. She hopes to replicate this feeling for others by providing them with figure skates.
Skates of Hope aims to gift skates in memory of those lost on American Airlines Flight 5342, which crashed in Washington D.C. The initiative is currently accepting donations of both monetary funds and used skates.
Cheesman uses her Instagram account to facilitate the process, allowing her to manage donations and keep track of the impact she’s having. So far, coaches have reached out to her with athletes who are struggling, seeking motivation through a free pair of skates.
The Skates of Hope founder’s ultimate goal is to turn her initiative into a nonprofit organization. Any financial contributions received would go directly to supporting families who lost loved ones in the tragic crash.
Anyone interested in donating skates or receiving a pair can reach out to Cheesman on Instagram for more information.
