Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has sounded the alarm about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, specifically highlighting concerns about AI’s potential to bring about either doom or irreversible human disempowerment.
In a recent tweet, Buterin emphasized the importance of limiting global computing power to prevent the development of superintelligent AI. He argued that reducing global computing power by 99% would give humanity several years to prepare for the singularity.
According to Buterin’s proposal, computer users should be verified and hardware registration provided. Additionally, industrial-scale computing hardware should only have chips installed after the device is authorized to operate. This move, he believes, would not significantly affect developers worldwide but could prevent superintelligent AI from being built in the “wrong ways.”
Buterin also took aim at ChatGPT, a popular language model developed by Meta AI, describing it as a writing assistant that can aid humans in generating text. However, he expressed concerns that if this technology were to evolve further, it could lead to catastrophic consequences.
The Ethereum co-founder emphasized the need for caution and urged the public to be mindful of the rapid advancements being made in the field of AI.
