Standard Chartered, Animoca, and HKT Collaborate to Create Hong Kong Dollar-Backed Stablecoin
In a significant move, Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong (SCBHK), Animoca Brands, and Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) have joined forces to develop a stablecoin pegged to the Hong Kong dollar. The partnership aims to enhance Hong Kong’s digital asset ecosystem by integrating stablecoins into financial markets and payment systems.
As part of their efforts, SCBHK, Animoca Brands, and HKT have been participating in the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) stablecoin issuer sandbox since July 2024. By leveraging their expertise across banking, telecommunications, and blockchain, the joint venture plans to create a secure and regulatory-compliant stablecoin framework.
Bill Winters, Group Chief Executive of Standard Chartered, emphasized the importance of digital assets in his statement. He noted that “digital assets are here to stay and the development of different forms of tokenized money is integral to the advancement of this industry.” The bank has been actively involved in various Central Bank Digital Currencies, tokenized deposits, and stablecoin projects, introducing solutions that cater to market demands.
This move aligns with Hong Kong’s broader strategy to promote digital finance adoption while ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory requirements. Hong Kong is committed to strengthening its role as a global digital assets hub by fostering innovation and collaboration among industry stakeholders.
Separately, there are whispers of Hong Kong considering the addition of Bitcoin (BTC) to its fiscal reserves as a hedge against inflation and store of value. Wu Jiexhuang, a member of the Hong Kong legislative council, has proposed utilizing foreign exchange funds to acquire Bitcoin, citing potential benefits such as attracting talent, boosting the local crypto industry, and increasing tax revenue.
This move could potentially give Hong Kong an early advantage and help mitigate economic instability from its wider adoption in traditional financial markets.
