Samsung’s Security Mistake—Change Your Galaxy Settings Now
In a shocking revelation, it has come to light that Samsung’s Galaxy devices have a major security flaw in their Secure Folder feature. This mistake puts users at risk of having their private data accessed without their consent.
The issue arises from the way Samsung’s Secure Folder is set up like a Work profile, which allows Android settings and permission controller apps to treat it as such. This means that even when the folder is locked, any app can see what files are stored there, including photos and videos. This raises serious concerns about data privacy and security.
As Android Authority explains, this flaw was replicated in One UI 7 by manually creating a work profile, although they note that the actual impact will depend on how work profiles are set up by organizations. Critically, even if an app tries to access Secure Folder files through a ‘work’ app, the Android system file picker blocks access, but only photos and videos are at risk of being accessed outside the Secure Folder.
This issue has significant implications for anyone using their Galaxy device with a Work profile enabled. As Android Police warns, “anyone in your employer’s IT department may be able to access and see all the files you’ve stashed in there.” This is not just limited to work profiles; any user who enables the feature on their device can fall victim to this security flaw.
The good news is that fixing this issue is easy. By changing your phone setup and encrypting the Secure Folder, you can add an extra layer of security to prevent unauthorized access. To do so, users should go ahead and set up encryption for their Secure Folder now.
Samsung has acknowledged the issue and is awaiting a fix, but until then, it’s crucial that Galaxy device users take immediate action to protect themselves.
