Singapore has arrested three individuals in connection with the alleged smuggling of Nvidia chips, according to a report by Channel News Asia. The two Singaporean nationals and one Chinese citizen were charged with fraud.
The investigation is reportedly centered around the potential diversion of restricted Nvidia chips from servers shipped from Singapore to Malaysia. It remains unclear whether the chips were actually diverted or if they were being used for legitimate purposes.
Nvidia’s annual report does indicate that it has sold products to Singapore, with the country representing 18% of its fiscal year 2025 revenue. However, actual shipments to Singapore accounted for less than 2% of sales. This disparity has raised concerns about potential illegal activities.
Dell, a major technology company that reportedly shipped servers from Singapore to Malaysia, has stated that it has a strict trade compliance program in place and will investigate any customers who fail to adhere to its policies.
Nvidia, on the other hand, has declined to comment on the matter. Supermicro, another company allegedly involved in the shipment of the servers, has not responded to requests for comment.
The incident highlights growing concerns about the potential misuse of advanced technology, particularly AI and high-performance computing components. The recent surge in demand for these technologies has led to a significant increase in illegal activities related to their distribution.
The Singaporean authorities have yet to provide further details on the investigation or any possible connections between the alleged smuggling ring and larger global trends.
