Benmont Tench Opens Up About Long-Awaited Solo Debut and His Thoughts on Late Friend Tom Petty’s Reissues
In an exclusive interview with Billboard, Benmont Tench, guitarist and keyboardist for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, is finally releasing his first solo album in 11 years. Titled “Change Your Mind,” the record marks a significant departure from his work with the iconic band he was a part of for nearly four decades.
Tench’s new album has been highly anticipated by fans and critics alike, as it signals a long-overdue return to the spotlight after dedicating most of his career to supporting Petty. In our conversation, Tench shared his creative journey over the past decade, his thoughts on the recent posthumous Tom Petty releases, and what drove him to finally step out from behind Petty’s shadow.
Billboard: Your new album is a significant departure from your work with The Heartbreakers. What inspired this change in direction?
Benmont Tench: You know, I think it’s just a natural evolution for an artist. I’ve been playing the same style of music for so long, and while that was incredible, I felt like I had to challenge myself creatively. This album is a chance for me to explore new sounds and themes.
Billboard: Your work with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers has always been deeply personal. How do you think your solo debut will be perceived by fans?
Benmont Tench: Honestly, I’m not really thinking about that right now. My focus is on making music that speaks to me, and if people connect with it, that’s amazing. If they don’t, well, that’s okay too. I’ve learned over the years that the most important thing is staying true to yourself.
Billboard: The release of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ back catalog has been a contentious issue in recent years. What are your thoughts on the posthumous releases?
Benmont Tench: Look, I think it’s great that people can now experience our music in new ways. But, at the same time, it feels like we’re losing something special by not having Tom here to share these experiences with us. He was the heart and soul of this band, and his absence is deeply felt.
Billboard: Your relationship with Tom was incredibly close. What do you think he would say about your solo work?
Benmont Tench: (laughs) Oh man, I have no idea! Tom was always a bit of a wild card when it came to giving advice or opinions on my music. But if I had to guess, he’d probably tell me I’m being too self-indulgent with this album. (laughs)
