Chevy Silverado EV vs Rivian R1T: How two EVs handled the iconic Mint 400 off-road race
In a thrilling display of electric power, a Chevrolet Silverado EV and a Rivian R1T took on the infamous Mint 400 off-road race, leaving all else in their dust. The event marks the first time that electric vehicles have competed in the prestigious off-road competition.
The two electric trucks were driven by professionals and privateers alike, with the team behind the Chevrolet Silverado EV comprising of Chad Hall, a seasoned racing truck driver, while the Rivian R1T was piloted by Nick Paris and Brett Rieser. The duo’s passion for their vehicle proved to be just as impressive as the performance.
The Mint 400, which took place in Nevada, is known for its treacherous terrain and demanding course that pushes even the most powerful vehicles to their limits. Despite the challenges, both electric trucks performed impressively, with the Chevrolet Silverado EV achieving a lap efficiency of .6 miles/kWh on the first loop and an identical figure on the second loop.
The Rivian R1T also turned in a strong performance, boasting the same efficiency rate as its competitor. The team behind it had to repair the vehicle after a front damper failure, which added 15 minutes to their overall race time.
Despite the setbacks, both teams showed remarkable skill and ingenuity, proving that electric vehicles are more than capable of keeping up with traditional gas-guzzlers in off-road racing.
