Title: Why you wouldn’t catch a real royal at a debutante ball: Etiquette expert says soirees popular with “nepo babies” are actually for ‘new money’ and are ‘a bit camp’
A debutante ball, once a staple of aristocratic society, has become a hot ticket item among the younger generation, particularly those in the entertainment industry. However, etiquette expert Lucy Holmes warns that these modern-day soirees have lost their royal touch and are now a playground for “new money” – those who have recently made it big.
“These events are no longer about maintaining the traditional values of nobility,” Holmes emphasized. “It’s all about flaunting one’s wealth and status to gain attention from the media, influencers, and other members of the ‘nepo baby’ crowd.”
The term “nepo baby” refers to individuals born into or married into wealthy families, often with a connection to celebrity circles. These events have become their playground, where they can socialize with like-minded individuals and perpetuate their lavish lifestyles.
According to Holmes, this shift away from traditional royal values is evident in the lack of genuine aristocracy attending these events. “You won’t catch Prince William or Kate Middleton at one of these parties,” she assured. “They have far more important things to attend to than a shallow display of wealth.”
Holmes also expressed her concerns about the camp nature of these modern debutante balls. “While I understand that people want to express themselves and be creative, some elements are becoming too over-the-top and theatrical. It’s almost as if they’re trying to outdo each other in a game of ‘Who can wear the most outrageous outfit?'”
The etiquette expert concluded by stating that these events have lost their original purpose – to provide a platform for young women to enter society with dignity, under the guidance of their families or mentors. “Nowadays, it’s all about self-aggrandizement and a desire to be seen as something you’re not,” Holmes said.
In light of this information, one cannot help but wonder if these modern debutante balls have lost their allure in the eyes of genuine royalty.
