LOS ANGELES – In a shocking move, the Los Angeles Rams have released star wide receiver Cooper Kupp, the team announced Tuesday.
The decision comes after months of trying to trade the three-time Pro Bowl selection, which ultimately proved unsuccessful. Kupp’s release comes as a surprise given his impressive production on the field, with 4,815 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns over his five-year tenure with the Rams.
“It is difficult to put into words how grateful I am for my time in LA,” Kupp said in a statement released by the team. “I have taken so much pride in playing alongside my teammates for the LA community, so thank you for embracing my family and making this such a special place for us.”
Despite his impressive production on the field, Kupp’s play has declined somewhat since the 2022 season, when he put up a career-high 1,829 receiving yards. Last year, he finished with just 710 yards.
The Rams’ decision to release Kupp likely stems from their desire to rebuild and get younger at wide receiver. The team extended Matthew Stafford earlier this offseason and brought in Davante Adams on a two-year deal after his brief stint with the New York Jets.
Kupp’s departure leaves a significant hole in the Rams’ receiving corps, but it also opens up an opportunity for other players to step up and make an impact.
The 28-year-old receiver will now have to find a new home as a free agent.
