California exploiting Medicaid “loophole” to pay millions for illegal immigrants’ health care, study says
The state of California is utilizing a tax loophole to provide millions of dollars in healthcare services to unauthorized immigrants, according to a recent study.
The report from the National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF) suggests that California has been exploiting a Medicaid loophole to funnel funds towards healthcare expenses for illegal immigrants. The foundation’s director, Andrew Wilford, explained the situation: “It is absolutely unacceptable that California is using taxpayer dollars to fund healthcare services for individuals who are not authorized to be in this country.”
The NTUF study found that the state’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, has been providing benefits to millions of illegal immigrants, despite federal law prohibiting the use of taxpayer funds for such purposes. This comes as a result of a 2014 court ruling that prohibited California from denying healthcare services solely based on immigration status.
According to Winfree, this loophole can potentially save billions in federal spending.
