Sonos Reportedly Scraps Its Long-Expected Streaming Video Device
According to recent reports, Sonos has canceled the development of a highly anticipated streaming video device, codenamed Pinewood. The move comes as a disappointment to many who were eagerly awaiting the company’s entry into the streaming video market.
As reported by The Verge, interim CEO Tom Conrad announced the cancellation during an all-hands call with employees on Wednesday. According to sources, Conrad stated that Sonos will not enter the streaming video market at this time, effectively reassigning the Pinewood project team to work on other initiatives.
Initially, it was rumored that Pinewood would be released in 2025 for a price range of $200 to $400. The device was expected to offer a unified software experience with universal search capabilities across various streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+. Additionally, the product would have integrated Sonos Voice Control and served as an HDMI hub for home entertainment devices such as game consoles.
Notably, Pinewood was also designed to seamlessly integrate with existing Sonos soundbars and speakers. However, these ambitious plans are now on hold, leaving the company without a major new product launch in the second half of 2025.
Instead, it seems that Sonos will focus on rebuilding its reputation and improving software performance following the disastrous rollout of a new mobile app in 2024, which led to the departure of former CEO Patrick Spence and other executives. The incident also resulted in significant layoffs and a restructuring plan.
When reached for comment, Sonos did not respond to our inquiry regarding this development.
