Meta is launching Community Notes in the US next week
TechCrunch Senior Reporter Maxwell Zeff has reported that Meta will be introducing its Community Notes feature to users in the United States by the end of this week. The new feature aims to tackle misinformation on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
According to sources, the initiative allows users to add fact-checking information to a post, providing an opportunity for people to weigh in on the accuracy of content before it spreads too far. In essence, the goal is to provide real-time fact-checking and crowd-sourced verification.
Researchers have found that people tend to see these Community Notes as more trustworthy than flags from third-party fact checkers. An analysis published in Science found that this system has led to a significant reduction of misleading posts by 61%. On the other hand, there are concerns about the potential drawbacks of such an approach.
As noted earlier, Meta’s new feature will require contributors with opposing viewpoints to agree on a note before it is displayed. This implies that fact-checks may only be added after a post has reached thousands or millions of people.
