Former SSA Commissioner Expects 10,000 Workers to Accept Buyout Offer
The Social Security Administration (SSA) may lose a significant number of employees due to its voluntary separation incentive payment offer. According to former SSA Commissioner Martin O’Malley, a staggering 10,000 workers could accept the buyout, significantly impacting the agency’s workforce.
O’Malley, who led the agency under the Biden administration from December 2023 to November 2024, expressed his concerns about the potential outcome of the restructuring initiative. He believes that many employees will take advantage of the offer to leave the agency by April 19, citing that “everybody who can is going to take that early out.”
The buyout offer aims to cut costs and reduce the federal workforce as part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) efforts. However, O’Malley warns that this approach could have devastating consequences for the SSA’s ability to function effectively.
The former commissioner emphasized that employees who choose not to accept the buyout will risk losing their jobs without a bonus, which may also contribute to a significant exodus from the agency.
