Judge Calls DOGE Firings a ‘Sham,’ Orders Thousands of Workers to Be Reinstated ‘Immediately’
In a scathing rebuke, a federal judge has deemed the mass firings carried out by DOGE as “unconstitutional” and “a sham,” ordering thousands of workers to be reinstated “immediately.”
U.S. District Judge Alsup ruled on Thursday that the abrupt terminations, which were announced in December, were an unjustified violation of employees’ rights. The judge called for the reinstatement of all affected workers, citing violations of federal law and the Civil Service Act.
“We’re not talking about some minor procedural glitch here,” Alsup said during a hearing. “This is a major constitutional issue. It’s a sham. And it can be done.”
The firings were carried out in response to an alleged insurrectionist plot within the agency, but critics have argued that the move was retaliatory and targeted employees who spoke out against DOGE policies.
Alsup’s decision comes as a major blow to the administration, which has faced widespread criticism over its handling of the crisis.
