Trump Threatens 200% Tariff on European Wine and Champagne
In a post to Truth Social, President Trump has announced his intention to impose tariffs of 200% on all wines, champagnes, and other alcoholic products imported from France and other European countries in response to the European Union’s decision to increase tariffs on American whiskey.
According to the post, Mr. Trump stated that if the EU does not immediately remove its tariff on U.S.-made whiskey, the United States will impose a 200% tariff on all wines and champagnes coming from France and other EU countries. The president claimed that this move would be “great for the wine and champagne businesses in the U.S.”
This development follows Trump’s recent increase of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 25%. This action prompted retaliatory measures from the EU, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stating that the countermeasures are worth $28 billion.
Von der Leyen expressed disappointment over the move, emphasizing that “tariffs are taxes. They are bad for business and worse for consumers. They disrupt supply chains, bring uncertainty to the economy, and put jobs at risk.”
This is not Trump’s first threat of tariffs in his presidency. He has previously imposed levies on several major U.S. trading partners since returning to office.
