In a recent interview, producer Rick McCallum shared his experience working on the infamous and scrapped George Lucas-led Star Wars show, titled “Star Wars Underworld”. McCallum, who was attached to the project in the early 2000s, revealed that Lucas’s vision for the series would have cost billions of dollars.
As McCallum recalls, Lucas wanted to create a massive, sprawling epic that would have explored the criminal underworld of Coruscant during the time between Episode III and IV. The show would have followed a group of bounty hunters, smugglers, and other unsavory characters as they navigated the seedy underbelly of the Star Wars universe.
“I think George was trying to make it like a western,” McCallum explained. “He wanted to do a gritty, hard-boiled, noir-inspired show that would have been really dark and mature.”
However, McCallum emphasized that Lucas’s ambition was simply too expensive for the studios at the time. “It was going to cost billions of dollars,” he said. “I mean, we’re talking Star Wars-sized budgets. It wasn’t just about making a TV series; it was about creating an entirely new universe.”
Despite the project being shelved, McCallum believes that Lucas’s vision would have been groundbreaking and revolutionary. “It would have changed television,” he asserted. “It would have changed the medium completely.”
Although Star Wars Underworld never came to fruition, it’s clear that the creative potential was immense. Perhaps one day, someone will revisit this concept and bring it to life in a way that does justice to Lucas’ original vision.
