It seems increasingly likely that ‘Starfield’ will make its way to the PlayStation 5 console.
Bethesda’s space-set RPG, Starfield, has been a massive hit for Microsoft since its release in 2023. The game’s immense success was largely fueled by its day-one inclusion on Xbox Game Pass, as well as being available on Steam.
However, with Microsoft now quadrupling down on their “nothing is off the table” multi-platform release strategy, it’s only a matter of time before Starfield becomes available to PlayStation users. This stance has already seen new IPs like Avowed and other titles avoid the PlayStation market so far.
But with Microsoft shifting its focus towards becoming a more inclusive gaming platform, releasing Starfield on PS5 (and potentially even the Nintendo Switch 2) seems like an inevitable outcome. The prospect of generating millions of additional sales could prove to be too enticing for the company to ignore.
It’s no secret that Starfield failed to live up to initial expectations in terms of player engagement and overall sales figures. While it did garner a significant number of players initially, its popularity has since flatlined with PC numbers peaking at just 4,000 concurrent players per night after its launch.
Even the release of new content, such as the Shattered Space expansion, failed to reignite interest in the game. This lack of excitement could be an opportunity for Microsoft to reinvigorate player engagement by releasing Starfield on other platforms like PS5 and possibly even Switch 2.
Furthermore, it’s been confirmed that there are ongoing plans for more content in Starfield, with at least one more Shattered Space-style expansion expected in the future. Releasing this new content simultaneously across all platforms could be a clever ploy to revive interest in the game.
While Microsoft didn’t originally plan to release Starfield on other platforms when it was acquired from Bethesda, times have changed since then. And given its multi-platform strategy shift, releasing ‘Starfield’ on PS5 would seem like only a matter of time.
