Streamer Plex raises subscription price for the first time in a decade
Plex, a leading streaming service and software maker, has announced its decision to increase its premium subscription service, Plex Pass, for the first time in a decade. The move comes as the company faces rising costs of supporting its users.
The updated pricing scheme will see the monthly fee for the Plex Pass rise to $6.99, up from the previous rate of $4.99. Additionally, the yearly cost will jump to $69.99, an increase from $39.99 previously. The lifetime Plex Pass subscription will now set users back $249.99, a hike from the previous price of $119.99.
The changes are set to take effect on April 29, giving current subscribers two months’ notice before the new prices kick in. Those looking to secure the lifetime pass at the old rate would do well to act quickly, as this offer will no longer be available after April 29.
In related news, Plex has also announced several other updates aimed at improving its service for users. These include the removal of a “mobile unlock” fee and changes to remote playback for personal media. The latter change means that non-subscribers will no longer have the option to watch content stored on a friend or family member’s server.
To address this new limitation, Plex has introduced the Remote Watch Pass subscription, which will be available starting April 29. This new plan offers users access to remote playback and select features like Skip Intro and Skip Credits for the low price of $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year.
In a blog post detailing the changes, Plex emphasized its commitment to balancing value with a high-quality user experience. The company stated that it has spent “a lot of time weighing the best path forward” in order to achieve this goal.
The changes are set to take effect on April 29 and current subscribers have been given two months’ notice to adjust their budgets accordingly.
