Block laid off 931 people today, according to a leaked message from the company seen by TechCrunch. The news was announced to staff in an email from Block’s co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey.
Here is the full text of the email:
“To all employees,
Today, we’re making some org changes, including eliminating roles and beginning the consultation process in countries where required.
These changes will affect approximately 931 people across the company. This decision was not easy, but it is necessary to ensure that Block continues to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
I want to be clear: none of these cuts are being made for financial reasons, nor are we trying to hit a specific financial target, replace folks with AI, or change our headcount cap. We’re doing this because we need to raise the bar and act faster on performance.
In terms of how it will work, all 748 open roles at Block will be closed, except in cases where an offer has already been extended to candidates or where there are critical operational requirements that cannot be delayed. This includes key leadership positions, critical operations roles, and some roles related to our crypto business.
We will also continue to invest in our people and their development, but we need to ensure the right alignment of resources with our changing needs.
