Buyer Beware: Data Shows Which Cars Return the Worst Resale Values
A new report from iSeeCars.com has shed light on the vehicles that take a significant hit in resale value after just five years of ownership. According to the data, certain luxury and electric vehicle models are far more likely to depreciate than others.
The worst offenders, as it turns out, are not surprisingly, luxury vehicles. The BMW 7 Series sedan tops the list with a staggering 67.1% loss in value over a mere half decade, with an average depreciation of $65,249.
Not far behind is the Jaguar i-Pace EV, which loses a whopping 72% of its original sticker price, or $51,953, after just five years. Other luxury sedans and SUVs also appear on this list, including the Maserati Ghibli and Maserati Levante, both of which lose over 60% of their value.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are not immune to this trend either. Tesla’s Model S and Model X, as well as the Nissan Leaf, all take a significant hit in resale value, with depreciation rates ranging from 60% to over 65%. In fact, EVs on average lose 58.8% of their value after five years, significantly higher than the industry average.
It’s no surprise that Tesla models are heavily represented on this list, given CEO Elon Musk’s tumultuous tenure at the helm and subsequent impact on the brand’s resale value. Notably, even the more affordable Model 3 EV still loses over 10% more of its value compared to the overall industry average.
The data is based on a comprehensive analysis of transaction prices for 800,000 vehicles sold between March 2024 and February 2025. The results show that some vehicle segments are far more likely to retain their value than others.
It’s crucial for potential buyers to be aware of these trends before making an expensive purchase. A loss of over $50,000 in value can have significant financial implications down the line.
