Alec Baldwin’s Rust trailer has sparked a divide among fans as the film’s release marks four years since the tragic on-set accident that claimed the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
The 2-minute, 30-second trailer for Rust shows intense scenes featuring guns and violence, leaving some viewers feeling uneasy about the movie’s depiction of such content. However, others have taken to social media to express their excitement and anticipation for the film’s release on May 2.
In response to the trailer, YouTube user @1TEXASBEACH praised Hutchins’ work as a director of photography, stating that her talent is evident in the trailer: “Can’t wait to see it. So incredibly sad all that happened but Halyna Hutchins was/is so talented and you can see that in the trailer.”
On X, another user, @DoctorKingSchultz, commented that they cannot wait for the film’s release, saying: “A tragic accident happened but to rob these people who worked on this movie for months now that would be a tragedy.” However, not all viewers are enthusiastic about the film’s content.
YouTube commenter @DickMoves1971 wrote sarcastically, “Not sure if I’d wanna watch a movie where the lead actor/EP [executive producer] kills their DP [director of photography] and gets away with it. Seems like a cursed enterprise.” Another user, @wrexweed, expressed similar sentiments on X: “I hate movies where the lead actor/EP kills their DP and gets away with it.”
In other news, Alec Baldwin has filed a civil lawsuit against the Rust case prosecutors, investigators, and commissioners for defamation and malicious prosecution and civil rights violations due to ‘intentionally mishandling evidence.’ Meanwhile, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in New Mexico Women’s Correctional Facility for her role in Hutchins’ death.
It remains unclear whether the trailer will spark any further controversy or discussions about the events surrounding Hutchins’ tragic passing.
