Music publishers are claiming they’re “very confident” in their case against AI company Anthropic, despite a recent legal setback. In a statement provided to Gizmodo, the music industry representatives said that while they were disappointed by the initial court decision, they believe it was only a minor bump in their ongoing battle.
“The Court noted this factor as an important part of its preliminary decision,” the publishers emphasized. “This further highlights the importance of ensuring that AI systems like Anthropic’s Claude chatbot do not infringe on creators’ rights.”
As previously reported, Anthropic has been accused by music publishers of allowing its Claude chatbot to generate copyrighted lyrics and songs without proper authorization or compensation. The company has argued that training Claude on copyrighted material constitutes fair use, but the music industry is pushing back.
The recent legal setback reportedly came as a surprise to many in the music publishing community, but according to sources close to the case, it was merely an initial hurdle in what promises to be a long and contentious battle.
