The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced plans to host a series of roundtable discussions focused on cryptocurrency regulation. The events are scheduled to take place between April and June 2025 and will explore various aspects of decentralized finance (DeFi). The roundtables, titled “DeFi and the American Spirit,” aim to examine the regulatory challenges posed by financial applications that operate without central authorities.
The meeting is set for June 6 and will be held at the SEC headquarters in Washington D.C. While attendees are expected to participate in person, the events will also be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person. Recordings of the discussions will later be posted on the SEC website.
The organization has also created a dedicated webpage for the Crypto Task Force where agendas and speaker information will be updated as it becomes available. Interested parties are encouraged to use this resource to communicate directly with the task force.
Additionally, potential panelists can submit their interest by emailing [email protected] with the subject line “Potential Panelist.” Due to high demand, however, not all requests may be accommodated.
The SEC’s shift in approach reflects a significant change from the agency’s previous stance under former Chair Gary Gensler. During his tenure, the SEC was known for its enforcement-based approach, whereas the new leadership appears to be adopting a more collaborative and industry-friendly strategy.
As part of this effort, the agency has started rolling back some of the stricter positions taken during the previous administration. Specifically, it has dismissed several enforcement actions initiated under Gensler’s leadership.
In a separate development, Uyeda plans to reconsider rules proposed under the Biden administration that would have tightened crypto custody standards for investment advisors. Additionally, the SEC is considering abandoning proposed changes that would expand regulation of alternative trading systems to include crypto firms.
The roundtable events are part of an ongoing effort by the SEC to better understand the unique aspects of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
