The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Cast List Is Bad For So Many Reasons
In a move that has left fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) scratching their heads, Disney has unveiled the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday, and it’s safe to say that it’s a mess. The presentation itself was as dull as watching grass grow, featuring an hour-long stream of actors’ names being read out over chairs. It’s a format that would have been laughable even if the content were good – but unfortunately, the cast list is just as underwhelming.
The biggest issue with the announcement is the sheer number of FOX X-Men characters that are joining the franchise. Six of them will be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, which seems like an odd choice given the vastly different tone and style of the two franchises. This also raises questions about the future of the MCU’s X-Men, as it appears that Marvel is planning to recast these roles with younger actors. The original X-Men cast, led by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, are now 50-85 years old, which makes their continued involvement in the franchise unlikely.
But even more disturbing than the inclusion of so many X-Men characters is who’s missing from this list. It’s hard to believe that a film featuring half the main characters from the last three non-Deadpool MCU movies and seven additional slots dedicated to FOX properties would not include some of the most important figures in the franchise. Specifically, Doctor Strange, Bruce Banner, Star Lord, Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Spider-Man are all absent from this list.
It’s possible that some of these characters will make cameo appearances, but it seems unlikely given their absence from the main cast. This lack of representation is even more jarring considering that Avengers: Doomsday is supposed to be a major crossover event. The exclusion of such iconic figures only adds to the sense that something is amiss with this film.
The inclusion of so many X-Men characters and the blatant disregard for other MCU staples has left fans feeling confused, annoyed, and disappointed. It’s hard not to wonder if the Russo Brothers, who are directing Avengers: Doomsday, will be able to make this mess work on screen. Their track record outside of the MCU is questionable at best, which only adds to my concerns about the film.
All in all, the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ cast list is a disaster, and it’s hard not to believe that this film will end up being a major misstep for the MCU.
