New Utah law makes app stores responsible for age verification
A new Utah law has made it mandatory for Apple and Google to take responsibility for verifying users’ ages on their app stores and obtain parental consent for minors. This development marks a significant shift in the ongoing debate over who should be accountable for ensuring age verification, with companies like Meta, X, and Snap praising the move.
The App Store Accountability Act was passed by Utah’s legislature earlier this month and is now awaiting the signature of Gov. Spencer Cox to become official. The law will require app stores to verify users’ ages before allowing apps to be downloaded onto their devices.
