Alexa+ is officially available, but many of the promised features are nowhere to be found. According to recent reporting by The Washington Post, internal company documents revealed that numerous tools and capabilities will not be ready for public use for at least two months.
Unfortunately, this means that Alexa+ users will have to wait even longer to utilize exciting new features such as ordering takeout on Grubhub, identifying family members via camera to remind them of tasks, and auto-generating a story to entertain kids. Additionally, the platform’s ability to brainstorm gift ideas and order groceries is also MIA.
Furthermore, it appears that there will be no browser-based version available for Alexa+, leaving users with limited options.
Despite these setbacks, Amazon does claim that Alexa+ can currently be used to order an Uber, identify objects, and draft emails. These capabilities may not be as extensive as initially promised, but they are still somewhat useful.
It’s worth noting that Alexa+ is only included with Amazon Prime membership, which will set you back $20 per month. Availability of the service is expected to expand over the coming weeks and months, although the exact timeline has not been disclosed.
One additional restriction is that Alexa+ can only be used on devices with screens, including the Echo Show 8, 10, 15, and 21.
