OpenAI disables image gen for certain Sora users as capacity challenges continue
On Monday, it was announced that OpenAI has temporarily disabled the image generation feature for new users of its suite of generative AI media tools, known as Sora. This decision comes as a result of the company still struggling to overcome the capacity issues brought on by the viral image generation feature that was launched last week.
According to a note posted on one of OpenAI’s support pages, “We’re currently experiencing heavy traffic and have temporarily disabled Sora video generation for new accounts.” However, it is important to note that users who have already logged into Sora can still generate images with the tool.
It is worth noting that OpenAI’s new image generation capability was met with significant fanfare – and controversy – due to its impressive ability to recreate styles like Studio Ghibli’s hand-drawn animation. Furthermore, over the weekend, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to social media to share his concerns about the company’s capacity issues.
In a post on X, he stated that the company “hasn’t been able to catch up” since the launch of the new feature and that staff have been working late nights and through the weekend in order to “keep the service up”.
