In this case, after some clever guessing and elimination, the answer is… SHEAR. Yes, it’s a word that means “to cut,” fittingly given our earlier scenario.

Only five words remained, but everything I came up with was some version of S?EAR. So I figured out a word that eliminated as many of the possible letters as possible and guessed SWAMP. That did the trick! Only SHEAR remained.
