YouTube Shorts takes on TikTok with new creation tools
As the deadline for a potential TikTok ban in the United States approaches, YouTube Shorts is upping its game by introducing a range of new features aimed at enticing creators to join the platform. The announcement comes as a direct response to TikTok’s robust editing capabilities and innovative templates.
In an effort to level the playing field, YouTube Shorts will soon roll out an improved video editor that allows users to adjust clip timing, move or remove clips to create a rough cut, add music or timed text, and preview their short-form content before finalizing it. This feature has been a top request from Shorts creators, indicating that it was much needed.
Furthermore, the platform will now provide AI stickers that can be generated using simple text prompts. The possibilities are endless – for instance, a creator could generate an AI sticker of “a strong plant with muscles.” To take it a step further, image stickers will also become available, enabling users to share various outfit inspiration options by uploading photos from their camera roll and transforming them into interactive elements.
Another key feature being introduced is the ability to align clips automatically with the rhythm of a chosen song. This tool appears to be similar to CapCut’s “Beats” function, which syncs music to video in real-time. No longer will creators have to manually adjust timing, allowing for more efficient content creation.
Additionally, YouTube Shorts will improve its template offerings by enabling users to incorporate personal photos from their gallery into the designs. The addition of effects within templates is also expected, further empowering creators with a wealth of creative possibilities. This move could be seen as an attempt to capitalize on TikTok’s popularity regarding the use of effects in short-form content.
The new features are slated for release in the coming months and will give YouTube Shorts a competitive edge over its rival platforms.
