
New Proposal Aims to Protect Bitcoin from Quantum Attacks

A new proposal has been introduced by Bitcoin developer Agustin Cruz, aiming to safeguard Bitcoin from potential quantum computing threats. This initiative seeks to ensure the security of unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) vulnerable to attacks that may arise in the future due to advancing quantum technology.
The proposed solution involves a hard fork consensus change that would compel users to migrate their funds to secure wallets. A designated timeline will be provided, allowing users to reorganize their assets before the deadline. Once this period is over, Bitcoin Core will refuse transactions attempting to spend funds from legacy wallets not upgraded to quantum-resistant standards.
This drastic measure could result in “burning” those coins that fail to migrate, essentially removing them from circulation. This development has sparked debate within the Bitcoin community, with some critics arguing that users who lack access to their wallets may risk permanently losing their funds if they miss the deadline.
The proposal remains in draft form and lacks an official Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) number. The uncertainty surrounding this approach highlights the need for further discussions on the best way to integrate quantum resistance without disrupting the core functionality of Bitcoin.
Despite these concerns, the QRAMP proposal underscores the urgency to prepare for potential future threats.
