Speaker Johnson Moves On Senate’s Trump Budget Bill Amid Threat of GOP Defection
House Speaker Kevin Johnson has moved forward with the Senate’s budget resolution, despite House Republicans threatening to defect over a lack of enforcement mechanisms for budget cuts.
In a letter to colleagues, Johnson stated that the House will “not accept nor participate in an ‘us versus them’ process resulting in a take it or leave it proposition from the Senate.” Instead, he emphasized the importance of working together with the Senate to prepare reconciliation bill titles for markup in the next work period.
The move comes after a group of House Republicans, led by Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington, expressed dissatisfaction with the Senate’s proposal. Arrington described the resolution as “unserious and disappointing,” citing its failure to mandate sufficient enforceable cuts.
“We are committed to working with President Trump, House leadership, and our Senate counterparts to address these concerns and ensure the final reconciliation bill makes America safe, prosperous, and fiscally responsible again,” Arrington vowed.
The House GOP’s reluctance to back the Senate’s budget resolution has raised questions about the fate of the reconciliation bill. As it stands, the proposal aims to reduce the deficit by $4 billion through unspecified cuts.
FOX News Digital reported that Johnson reiterated his goal of delivering a bill to President Trump’s desk by the end of May.
In response to the situation, Speaker Johnson urged lawmakers to put aside partisan divisions and work together in good faith.
