Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has been grilled over his assertion that Joe Biden made a “major mistake” in seeking re-election.
CNN host Jake Tapper pressed Walz on the comment, asking why he thinks it was a mistake for Biden to seek another term. Walz acknowledged that he owns the loss and criticized himself for not doing enough to warn Americans of what Trump’s presidency would bring.
“I do think the challenge for Democrats is, I think this is a structural problem that’s going to take a lot more thinking,” Walz said. “Why with all of that out there did they not think we were any better than that? And they didn’t, and I’m very concerned with the folks who stayed home.”
Tapper also asked about criticisms that the Democratic Party was gaslighting Americans on issues such as inflation, immigration, and Biden’s fitness for office. Walz argued that Biden led the country out of the COVID-19 pandemic and did a good job, but acknowledged that the party failed to effectively message on immigration.
“The idea that President Biden was up for another four years in the job while Americans in poll after poll were saying ‘he’s too old to do the job,’ your party stood against all those things,” Tapper said.
Walz maintained that the Democratic Party failed to effectively address these issues, which ultimately contributed to their electoral defeat.
The comments come as Democrats are left reeling from a disappointing midterm election performance.
