Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is finally ready to compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service, according to reports. Amazon’s Kuiper project has been in development for years and will launch its first batch of satellites today.
Bezos’ company has long been accused of playing catch-up with SpaceX’s Starlink project, but it seems like the billionaire entrepreneur is finally ready to take on Musk. “This is a major milestone for us,” Bezos said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be launching our final satellite design and deploying so many satellites at once.”
Kuiper has been working on its technology for several years, and the company is expected to provide high-speed internet access to underserved communities around the world. The service will be available in the United States, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Amazon’s Kuiper project is not just about providing internet access, though. It’s also a major challenge to SpaceX’s Starlink program, which has been rapidly expanding its global coverage. By launching such a large number of satellites at once, Amazon is hoping to gain the upper hand in the satellite internet wars.
“We’ve learned a lot from our previous launches and are excited to finally be able to deliver on our promise,” said Bezos.
