I’m a cruise expert – and I’ve seen it all when it comes to passenger mishaps at sea. But there’s one mistake that’s really got under my skin, and it’s something that will not only inconvenience yourself but also seriously annoy the crew.
First off, let me just say that I’ve been on hundreds of cruises around the world and have encountered some pretty bizarre situations. From passengers trying to sneak onto the ship without paying to others attempting to smuggle exotic animals onboard (yes, really), you name it, I’ve seen it.
But despite all my experience, there’s one thing that still makes me roll my eyes in frustration – and it’s something that will make your fellow travelers (and the crew) very unhappy indeed.
Are you ready? It’s… not booking shore excursions through the cruise line. Now, before I get flamed by all the die-hard independent explorers out there, hear me out.
Firstly, let me say that I completely understand the appeal of going off-piste and doing your own thing during port stops. Who doesn’t love the thrill of discovering hidden gems or stumbling upon a secret bar in some obscure alleyway? The problem is that by not booking through the cruise line, you’re leaving yourself (and potentially others) high and dry if things go wrong.
Case in point: I once saw a group of passengers get stuck in a dead-end street because they had wandered off without telling anyone where they were going. Panic ensued as they frantically tried to find their way back to the ship – all while the crew was scrambling to locate them (and, might I add, very politely asking them to please book through the cruise line next time).
And that’s not even getting into the logistics of it all. Have you ever tried to get a group of people to agree on what they want to do during an excursions? It’s like trying to herd cats. By booking through the cruise line, at least you have a dedicated team looking after your every need (and, might I add, taking care of any last-minute changes or issues that may arise).
Now, I know some of you are thinking, “But I don’t want to be tied down to some rigid itinerary!” And trust me, I get it. Cruise ships do have an annoying habit of dictating exactly what you can and can’t do at each port – but honestly, this is for a reason.
Think about it like this: the cruise line has partnered with local businesses to provide these excursions because they know the lay of the land (or rather, sea). They’ve got people on the ground who are experts in ensuring everyone gets back safely and having a good time. By not using them, you’re essentially playing roulette with your safety.
And before anyone accuses me of being some stuffy cruise industry shill, let me assure you that I’m here to tell it like it is. As someone who’s spent their career navigating the high seas, I can confidently say that there are far more important things to stress about than whether or not I get to try a dodgy street food vendor.
So, there you have it – my take on why booking shore excursions through the cruise line is the way to go. Don’t believe me? Well, just ask my fellow travelers who got stuck in that dead-end street…
As always, happy sailing!
