Andor Wouldn’t Have Happened in a World Without Baby Yoda
Showrunner Tony Gilroy credits The Mandalorian for paving the way to create a Star Wars series like Andor, which he believes wouldn’t have been possible without the success of the beloved character.
In an interview with Empire Magazine ahead of the premiere of Andor season two, Gilroy emphasized the importance of The Mandalorian’s impact on the trajectory of future Star Wars storytelling. He stressed that the show’s groundbreaking narrative and innovative production would not have led to a series like Andor, without the phenomenon that was Baby Yoda.
“You can’t ignore the fact that The Mandalorian has been incredibly successful,” Gilroy stated. “It has done something no one thought possible – it’s brought us back into the Star Wars universe in a way that feels fresh and exciting.”
Gilroy pointed out that Andor, a live-action series exploring the early days of the Rebel Alliance, would have never seen the light of day without The Mandalorian’s influence. He believes that Baby Yoda, specifically, played a crucial role in revitalizing public interest in Star Wars.
“I think it’s clear that we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for [The Mandalorian], and certainly not for Baby Yoda,” Gilroy declared. “It’s hard to overstate how important this character has been in bringing us back into the fold.”
Gilroy went on to emphasize the transformative impact of The Mandalorian’s success, stating that it allowed Lucasfilm to take risks with new projects like Andor.
“It’s opened up doors for us to explore different corners of the universe,” he said. “And that includes shows like Andor, which would have never been possible without [The Mandalorian].”
Gilroy’s statements come as Andor prepares to drop its highly anticipated second season, and further solidify The Mandalorian’s position as a groundbreaking series in the Star Wars canon.
In related news, io9 has learned that Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, the upcoming animated anthology series, will feature the iconic character Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane.
