Oklahoma Softball Coach Defends Players Who Attended Riley Gaines Event
The head coach of the University of Oklahoma’s softball team is standing by her players after they attended an event featuring Riley Gaines, a college athlete who has been at the center of controversy surrounding transgender athletes in sports.
Gaines, a former University of Kentucky swimmer, was banned from competing in women’s events by the NCAA due to her biological sex. However, she and others have spoken out against the policy, saying it is discriminatory towards transgender individuals.
Oklahoma softball coach Ronda Lohr said in a statement that she “fully supports” her players who attended Gaines’ event and that they are free to participate in any discussions or events that promote unity and inclusion.
“We believe in empowering our athletes to be leaders on and off the field, and we are proud of their commitment to standing up for what they believe is right,” Lohr said.
